Radiation Services

Namarak Hospital is committed to offering the most advanced and effective breast cancer treatment technologies for a better quality of life for our patients. We are proud to offer Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) with the Intrabeam 600, a cutting-edge innovation that improves precision, reduces side effects, and shortens treatment time.

1. Plan radiation therapy treatment.

Nam Rak Hospital provides radiation treatment planning services by radiation oncologists and coordinates referrals to partner radiation hospitals, divided into:

1.1 Breast-Conserving Surgery

  • Whole Breast Radiation (WBR): This involves treating the entire breast with radiation and takes approximately 20-25 sessions.

  • Boost Radiation: Radiation may be given to the tumor site for an additional 1-2 weeks to reduce the chance of recurrence.

1.2 Post-mastectomy radiation therapy

  • In cases where the cancer is larger than 5 cm. or is a wound on the skin or close to the chest wall

  • Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

1.3 Radiation therapy to areas where cancer has recurred, such as skin and bones.

2. Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT)

A new innovation in breast cancer treatment that combines surgery and radiation therapy in one step.

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with the Intrabeam 600

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a technique that delivers a single, high-dose dose of radiation directly to the surgical wound immediately after the surgeon has removed the tumor.

Namrata Hospital has chosen the Intrabeam 600, the newest and most advanced machine in Thailand, to provide the most accurate and safe treatment to patients.

Advantages of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT)

IORT treatment continues to grow in popularity, with several advantages over traditional radiation therapy:

  • High efficiency and precision: Radiation can be delivered immediately after surgery, allowing the radiation to be precisely targeted, increasing the efficiency of eliminating any remaining cancer cells.

  • Reduced frequency of radiation therapy: Most patients can complete radiation therapy in one session, eliminating the need for 20-25 hospital visits, reducing burden and saving time.

  • Protects healthy tissue: The Intrabeam 600 delivers radiation only to the wound cavity, leaving healthy tissue and surrounding organs, such as the heart and lungs, minimally affected by radiation.

  • Faster recovery: Reducing the number of radiation treatments required allows patients to recover faster and return to their normal daily activities sooner.

  • Boosts Confidence: Modern and effective treatment with advanced technology reduces anxiety and builds confidence in patients during the treatment process.

Who is suitable for IORT treatment?

IORT is an ideal option for patients with early-stage breast cancer, with the following preliminary considerations:

  • The cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.

  • The size of the tumor is not too large.

  • Pathological characteristics of non-malignant cancer cells

  • No spread to lymph nodes

The decision to choose IORT treatment must be carefully evaluated by a team of medical experts.

Surgical and radiation procedures using the Intrabeam 600

The IORT treatment process is designed to be as smooth and effective as possible, and involves the following steps:

  1. Surgery: A surgeon performs a surgical procedure to remove the cancerous tumor and some of the tissue (lumpectomy).

  2. Internal organ protection: Before radiation, your doctor will place a lead sheet or special shielding material at the base of the wound cavity to prevent radiation from reaching vital chest organs, such as the lungs and heart.

  3. IORT Radiation Therapy: The Intrabeam 600 head is inserted into the wound cavity and radiation is delivered directly to the target tissue.

  4. Duration: The radiation treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes, with the total surgery and radiation treatment time being approximately 2-3 hours.

  5. Completion: After the radiation is complete, the surgeon removes the instruments and protective covering and then closes the wound as usual.

Namarak Hospital is proud to be a part of elevating breast cancer treatment with Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT) technology, using the Intrabeam 600. We believe this technology will be the best choice for the right patients, enabling the most effective treatment, reducing both physical and mental burden, and restoring a better quality of life to patients more quickly.
