Most breast abnormalities don't mean cancer, but some are warning signs that should be investigated, especially new lumps, changes in the skin or nipple, or unusual breast discharge. This guide compiles key symptoms in one place, explains which ones require urgent investigation, and provides links to detailed articles about each symptom.

1. A lump in the breast.

Lumps are the most common symptom. Most are benign, but if you find a lump that is hard, irregularly shaped, or growing, you should see a doctor for examination. Read the article "Lump Found – Is it Cancer?"

2. Skin changes (redness, pitting, bumpy skin resembling an orange peel).

Redness, swelling, or bumps resembling an orange peel on the skin may be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, which requires urgent diagnosis. Please read more about redness, bumps, and orange peel-like skin bumps.

3. Changes in the nipple, such as a retracted or inverted nipple.

You should check for nipples that have retracted or sunken in. Read the section on Nipple Changes/Retraction.

4. There is fluid coming out of the nipple.

Especially if there is blood mixed in, the discharge comes from one side, or it flows spontaneously for no apparent reason. The color of the blood indicates urgency. Please read more about Nipple Discharge: Causes and Warning Signs.

5. Breast pain.

Most breast pain is not caused by cancer and is usually related to the menstrual cycle. However, if you experience localized or chronic pain, or if there is a lump, you should see a doctor for examination. Read more about breast pain: causes and when to worry.

When should you see a doctor immediately?

You should see a doctor if you find a new lump that doesn't go away after your period, changes in your skin or nipples, bloody discharge, or any other symptoms that concern you. Early detection leads to the best results. Start with screening and diagnosis.
